Water-Wise Annuals

Watering “low water use” annuals correctly after planting is critical to ensure the plant develops a sufficiently deep root system to withstand future stress conditions. This means soaking the soil around the root zone (or in a container: until excess water starts to drain) and then waiting until the soil is dry to the touch down to an inch below the surface before watering again. With adequate care during this initial period, the plant should withstand minimal watering during our dry spells from July to September.

When planting in containers, consider the container material: plastic or wood hanging baskets will dry out much slower than moss baskets. Resin, wood, plastic, or glazed containers are better than unglazed clay (e.g., terracotta) for the same reason. Saucers help capture drain water to be reused. Adding moisture-holding polymer pellets to your potting soil can also reduce the amount of watering needed (follow label directions carefully for best results).

Those listed below tend to require less water when established as described above. For more detailed information about each plant, please refer to individual cultivar signs, or consult one of our nursery professionals.
